In 1982, Ari Weinzweig, along with his partner Paul Saginaw, founded Zingerman’s Delicatessen with a $20,000 bank loan, a Russian History degree from the University of Michigan, 4 years of experience washing dishes, cooking and managing in restaurant kitchens and chutzpah from his hometown of Chicago. They opened the doors with 2 employees and a small selection of specialty foods and exceptional sandwiches.
Today, Zingerman’s Delicatessen is a nationally renowned food icon and the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses has grown to 10 businesses with over 750 employees and over $55 million in annual revenue. Aside from the Delicatessen, these businesses include Zingerman’s Bakehouse, Coffee Company, Creamery, Roadhouse, Mail Order, ZingTrain, Candy Manufactory, Cornman Farms and a Korean restaurant that is scheduled to open in 2016. No two businesses in the Zingerman’s Community of Businesses are alike but they all share the same Vision and Guiding Principles and deliver “The Zingerman’s Experience” with passion and commitment.
Besides being the Co-Founding Partner and being actively engaged in some aspect of the day-to-day operations and governance of nearly every business in the Zingerman’s Community, Ari Weinzweig is also a prolific writer. His most recent publications are the first 4 of his 6 book series Zingerman’s Guide to Good Leading Series: A Lapsed Anarchist’s Approach to Building a Great Business (Part 1), Being a Better Leader (Part 2), Managing Ourselves (Part 3) and the newly-released Part 4, The Power of Beliefs in Business. Earlier books include the Zingerman’s Guides to Giving Great Service, Better Bacon, Good Eating, Good Olive Oil, Good Vinegar and Good Parmigiano-Reggiano.
12 Natural Laws of Business
Ari will speak about the 12 Natural Laws of Business and thoughts on why operating in violation of them has created an energy crisis in the American workplace. This approach is applicable whether you’re running a law office, a library, a restaurant, a record label, a software firm, or an organic farm – they are the behind-the-scenes “secrets” that go into making a very special, sustainable business of any kind.
Bottom Line Change®
Most people enjoy change when they feel part of the process and resent it when they feel the change has been imposed upon them. Since change is a constant in organizations, learning how to manage it effectively is a valuable leadership tool. In this workshop, ZingTrain shares the change process that Zingerman’s uses to make sure the right people get involved at the right time. The Bottom-Line Change® Recipe works equally well for small, quick changes and organization-wide, long-term changes.
If you haven't been to one of these, you really need to be. Bright people with great ideas, headed by bright people with great training. It's just a wonderful way to spend a few days of your time, and I think it's very valuable for your career. So many intelligent remodelers who face the same things I face, and hearing their takes on it. I think about ways to break away from what has become my norm and look for new ways to challenge myself and new ways to approach my business

I've been coming to the show for 20 years and it's one of the best shows in the industry. I love it because it brings together committed, passionate, smart people in the industry. The speakers that they get at these conferences are tremendous. They're not just the ‘sticks and breaks,’ they take it to a whole other level of sophistication. Just do it… You need to get out of your business, out of the day-to-day, just for a couple of days.”
