Zack/de Vito Architecture + Construction
Deeply respected in the San Francisco Bay Area, Jim has a genuine, irrepressible interest in how buildings are made and detailed. He is someone who knows how to, or can figure out, how to build anything.
Zack |de Vito Architecture + Construction was first established as an architecture practice, but very quickly started incorporating design/build/development and in 1995 started to offer design/build and development services to clients along with construction-only services to build the work of his architect peers. Jim has a wealth of knowledge he brings to his client work and enjoys sharing openly in professional circles.
His professional experience covers a diverse range of project types and sizes—with an emphasis on modern residences and restaurants, and experience in commercial, hospitality, multi-family and affordable housing. Jim’s hands-on background is evident in the attention to craft, and innovative, informed construction techniques and detailing, that he brings to his buildings. In his youth he worked as a journeyman carpenter and contractor with his father’s development and construction business in his home town of Carmel, California—designing and building his first residential development when he was 22.
Jim is an accomplished furniture designer and maker, with a number of custom furniture pieces in the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) permanent collection. He received both a Bachelors and Masters degree in architecture from UC Berkeley, and is a California licensed architect and contractor. When he is not working, tinkering or building, he hangs out with his wife and kids, travels, and can occasionally be found racing his motorcycles or riding bicycles.
